In Mumbai and Pune, Janmashtami is celebrated by bursting “Dahi Handi.” A clay pot filled with buttermilk is placed at a convenient height, and people break it by making a human pyramid. The troops are given gifts and cash prizes.
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated at home by offering prayers to Lord Krishna. Devotees fast for the whole day. Special dishes are prepared on this occasion which are offered as “Prasadam” to devotees. People decorate the deity of Lord Krishna as well as their homes. Little children have dressed like Lord Krishna. Various dances and dramas are also performed.
Various prayers are offered all night in temples as well as homes. The priests at various temples chant holy mantras and offer the idol of Lord Krishna with “Panchamrita,” milk, honey, ghee, and curd, offering all these things with great devotion. After offering all the things to the newly born Krishna, the idol is placed in a crib.
There may be differences in the style and rituals in Janmashtami Celebrations in different parts of the country, but devotion and love towards Krishna are the same. Every Indian celebrates the Janmashtami Festival with great joy, devotion, and enthusiasm.
